Texas has no state income tax, low restriction property rights, great firearm laws. No state deficit spending (has a rather large surplus that doesn't have to dip into) great beaches, pine forests in east Texas, canyons in big bend national park, and instilled a strong sense of personal responsibility. The only thing bad is the weather is unpredictable and it gets too hot in the summer.

95% of Texas is private land. There is so much more than Angelina NF and Big Bend. There's Hamilton pool outside of Austin, and many many other places in the Hill country with similar beauty. It's all private though. Texas will never preserve any of it because muh property. Austin expands, bulldozes it, and turns it into a suburb. Same near Houston, same near Dallas. All that beauty that isn't protected from law is getting destroyed.

Its laws on drug offenses creates a hostile police environment. A lot don't experience this, but it takes even one minor interaction with the police to sour you. I had a local cop in Texas harass me for having a bottle of tylonel, for example.

I spent three months in Colorado during the winter 2013-2014. From what I experienced there are a lot of liberal hippies (especially the Boulder area). I've also been to Fort Collins which is not so different than Boulder, and also Denver (big city + lots of mexicans = democrat area). The mountain towns (such as Estes Park, for example) are a lot more conservative, but they are very small overall and that is not enough to counter the heavily populated democratic areas.

So it's more or less a hippie state, no wonder it's one of the first places that legalized marijuana.
