I looked it up. The main island in that region -- which, by the way, is 1,350 miles from St. Helena -- is called Tristan da Cunha. In 1810, an American man from Salem declared himself the sovereign ruler of the island chain, but he and his two friends died during a fishing trip a few years later.
It was used as a base to harry English merchant ships during the War of 1812, and later the British crown annexed the island to prevent a Napolean rescue operation.
