They are trying to do what Hawkins has spent most of his career trying to do. They are trying to find a way of measuring the start of the big bang.
The problem is they are assuming it started with nothing. The only way their model works is by changing the geometry from subatomic level (extremely small) to "normal" geometry.... It avoids all that complicated fiddling about with Quantum theory.
