I went in 2013 and didn't remember seeing any but then again I was bluepilled then.
A lot of oil has been found, leading to an explosion of industry and a subsequent housing shortage (in Minot anyway). I remember very clearly an pizza hut advertising a 15 dollar starting wage, but this corresponds to a high cost of living. I think a lot of the out of state workers were living in temporary housing or mobile homes.

It has a state-run central bank; ergo, it is the axis of evil.

Median income is probably better, since a lot of those high income states have high income inequality.

The air base has been doing that for decades, but oil hasn't helped any. I remember the biggest talk around town in 2010 or so was that the man camps were literally being fenced in for our protection.

Minot's housing shortage was more a result of the the flood in 2011 than the oil boom. (In '08 there was a housing surplus and nobody knew why land developers were insistent on building more $400,000 houses)

I honestly can't explain the cripples, but fun fact: Minot Public Schools spends its entire "Special Education" budget on classes and equipment for handicapped kids despite the fact that a portion of it is legally supposed to be used for "gifted" programs. Thus, MPS has no gifted programs.

North Dakota is case and point as to why the states aren't comparable. We try to rank the states as if they were ever meant to compete. Where does N. Dakota rank economically without oil? Where does Mississippi rank without nigs dragging it down? Where does NY rank without NYC acting as the nations largest center of commerce and finance?
