IMO the way they treated Manning in the past was wrong. Lower security prison would be a good mea culpa and gesture, backed by also making sense from a risk standpoint. I would have begrudgingly given Obama some respect for that. Clemency is crazy though, especially seeing as it is a military matter and not a civilian one. Sorry, but the standards and expectations of a military personnel are more stringent than that of a civilian, the punishment should reflect that.

As for Manning's celebrity status, yeah, that worries me too. Not to a great extent, because I think Manning's crime is too great to ever really grant the clean slate required to really get going. As for others following a similar path, maybe. Being granted clemency for this after ~7 years for a major act sends a bad signal to those that might consider a smaller one for notoriety. Who knows. Deal with it if and when it happens.

I think a big part of it was that he goes to military prison not regular prison, and also he kept trying to kill himself. I'm not too familiar with how things went for him. Last time I really gave it attention he was trying to strangle himself with bedsheets or something and was locked up in Leavenworth, I think. Gotta take away everything he can tie around his neck, and I'm pretty sure military tried under the UCMJ don't go to regular prison no matter what.
