Structural engineer here, easy explanation. Most load bearing columns were on the perimeter, this was a construction technique utilized to move structural elements from the interior to the exterior to maximize rentable floor space. As a result, the exterior frame was much stronger than the interior. It would be surprising if the building WASN'T gutted as pictured.

Work was ongoing on 9/11. Team of workers, in and out, taking deliveries, loading and unloading crates and boxes of equipment, for years.
That's how they rigged it to blow. There would have been teams with access to most of the building for years. People coming and going to "work on the wiring" would have been commonplace and passed without question.

Simplest thing to do in order to tie up some loose ends would have been to tell the crew(s) to have the work done by a later date than 9/11. The work was not complete on 9/11, both towers were at less than 90% completion (for the renovation).
And look at how the buildings themselves collapsed. A large section of one tower from above the plane impact fell away largely intact, while the rest of the building underneath the impact simultaneously disintegrated.
My guess is that they didn't finish rigging the entire building, just enough of the lower and middle floors to ensure the total failure of the entire building above the last charges. Send in the workers to "double check" the wiring before paying out the bonuses, the planes create carnage and chaos in the general areas where the crews would have been, and then after enough eyes are on tv screens globally they blew the buildings, one after the other.
