Good. The government shouldn't be subsidizing private business. Theater owners all that money and keep all the profits. What if I wanted to start my own theater and have my own shows, how the fuck am I going to compete with them unless I also receive government funding? Subsidization is essentially a government enforced monopoly on the arts.

Patronage of the arts by people in government and royalty has akways been a thing. But you're right that the idea of 'public' funding for arts is very recent and comes directly from communism. Fascist governments also funded 'public' art but it was all explicitly propaganda. Legt governments fund propaganda and call it art.
