Born and raised in Bay Area, lived, worked and went to uni in SF for 5 years.
This is because the city is hostile to raising kids, mostly because is it a pit of degeneracy. Drugs are everywhere and people do them in public even in 'quiet' areas like Nob Hill or the Sunset. There are throngs of weirdos wandering the streets, the schools are concrete jungles that look more like jails, bad drivers abound and no one knows their neighbors who more than likely don't even speak English - look at SF's demographics. I lived in apartments where I was the only English speaker, and in one case the only one on the block. Rent is outrageous and the cost of living for everything else has risen accordingly. Raising kids in such a place would be hell which is why so many don't.
With that said SF should stay as leftist as it wants to be. The City has always been a playground for the rich and the people who serve them, it just is so even more now. Let it fester and advertise it South Park style so all the hippies, burnouts, druggies, faggots and other assorted freaks migrate there. It will keep them from spreading elsewhere.

The economics of scale and the money coming into those resource sinks should give them advantages for raising children(better schools, jobs, etc) but instead they sabatoge the lives of millions just to reduce the competition for the fortunate sons who got to go to private schools.
Ban private schools, ban abortion, and repeal the 17th Amendment and you'll notice almost overnight that all those problems urban areas had could be fixed easily.
