Yes and no. First off, i am greek, and i literally just came back from my 20 day vacation there. It feels like a 3rd world country half of the time. For example, if you see the college facilities we have there, you will get depressed and lose all hope for everything. Thessaloniki. 2nd largest city/co-capital has been under construction for the past 20 years, it's a loud, filthy mess, the whole city. How much does the average greek citizen make? Well it ranges from 400-600€ does that mean that the life in greece is cheap? hell no. The supermarket in germany is quite literally, no, LITERALLY half the price, EVEN on greek products such as Feta dodoni. Why? The same reason why their gas costs around 20% more than in germany. 1 liter of gas costs 1.65 there, no. not the 100 octane one, the normal unleaded one. For perspective, 3.8 liters are one galon. That's like, 7$ per galon for normal gas. What's the price per galon in the US? Well what about clothing? Expensive. It's basically a luxus to have there.
Taxes? Does your household make more than 50k per year? Well say goodbye to 60 (sixty) % of it. bye bye. And the government is literally wondering why nobody will invest in greece. Jeez i wonder why.
The only thing cheap in greece us the Rent. It's dirt cheap because nobody can afford it anyway. So how do people live in greece? They wont for long. Almost everybody lives with their parents and they live of of the pension from said parents. Either that, or they have relatives in germany/australia/us/anywhere else who finance them. (my mother and i finance my brother).
What about the youth? Greece is full of smart people that have given up hope ebcause they were forced to. everybody worth a damn can't wait to leave the country because there is quite literally nothing to keep you there. Your degree has zero worth, NO MATTER WHAT it is. 5% of our youth are geniuses. 50% of them decent people, the rest are a lost cause.
