Harness-Induced Death

Wide ranges of situations require safety harnesses of various types. Workers requiring fall protection, workers entering many confined spaces, mountain climbers, deer hunters in elevated stands, and cave explorers all try to protect themselves through the use of safety harnesses, belts, and seats. What is little known however, is that these harnesses can also kill. Harnesses can become deadly whenever a worker is suspended for duration over five minutes in an upright posture, with the legs relaxed straight beneath the body. This can occur in many different situations in industry. A carpenter working alone is caught in mid-fall by his safety harness, only to die 15 minutes later from suspension trauma. An electrical worker is lowered into a shaft after testing for toxic gases. He is lowered on a cable and is positioned at the right level to repair a junction box. After five minutes he is unconscious--but his buddies tending the line don't realize it, and 15 minutes later a dead body is hauled out. The cause of this problem is called "suspension trauma." Fall protection researchers have recognized this phenomenon for decades. Despite this, data have not been collected on the extent of the problem; most users of fall protection equipment, rescue personnel, and safety and health professionals remain unaware of the hazard.

Interesting. I've been climbing for years but didn't know about this. Its normal to take protracted rests on your harness while climbing, especially on big walls. I wonder how prevelant this is. I assume this wouldn't be a problem unless you wear a chest harness, since if you faint your body will fall horizontal and increase blood flow.

You should try climbing sometime. It's fun learning how to climb, set lines, hang structures, etc., and good exercise.

Actions like the Elliot Forest Free State have shut down and put halts to mass clearcutting in national forests by building entire cities in the trees, which prevent logging from comencing, usually as a halting tactic until projects can be stopped through political and social outcry means.

Well, it depends on what your definition of war is. At a certain level of severity of environmental destruction, impact on human well being, and cost of life by the state and huge corporations, I think things such as "heavy resistance" on pipeline and coal infrastructure that allow such harm become more self defense than how the government has framed it ("violent domestic terrorists bent on destroying democracy").

Our generation seems really tame compared to past ones. Look at the 60's through 90's; The Weather Underground, The George Jackson Brigade, Robert Williams renegade NAACP, Earth First in the 80's, ELF, ALF.

Current USA political movements are largely missing this element. Some of it, I believe is due to increased political oppression and heightened scentences, along with the effect of social media. But I also think young people in our generation are spoiled and their refusal to make greater sacrifices under fear for their own well being under political prosecution or way of life shows this. I think this is partially due to a lack of war requiring mass enrollment. Our grandparents had WWI and WWII. Our parents had Vietnam. This carnage radicalized people and pushed them to go further than just holding signs and doing marches. Our current generation seems to be having a hard time moving past that.

I do have fun with it.

I love the forests deeply and the time I spend in them is invalueable to me. When I would through a spot that used to be deep, biodiverse old growth trees, and is now a clear cut nightmare, it hurts me intensely. I think of the destruction such places face, like in the Aboreal forest under tar sands extraction, or in Peru under expanding US lead rainforest destruction, and it makes me want to fight to protect them.

Same goes for other things I feel passionate about, such as widespread destruction of cultural diversity in major US cities as a result of gentrification by the largely boring, rich tech/yuppie cultures.

That doesn't mean I still don't get some chuckles out of the Sup Forums party on Leabouf's livestream. I think it's very important to fight for what you believe in, but if it means you become so staunched in your idealism that you can't have fun in life or properly debate or argue someone with oppossing ideas without resulting to logical fallacies or personal attacks, what's the point?
