I know it's due to the Ruskies that large parts of Germany are now Poland, but at the same time the Polish lusted for the civilized German lands to the West. The Polish had never become a society able to achieve grandness - from their space programs to their way of urban life.
In 1994, I visited with my grandparents the small village near Breslau where they came from - it's a rich area of Poland, and yet the town was merely a shadow of what it had once been.
They're good people, mostly, the Polish - just without dreams of grandeur.

Well, it was rekt during the war, depopulated, populated by 100% immigrants, suffered over 40 years of communism and had population of people believing that Germans will take it back soon, so did nothing to improve it.
Until very recently "German" part of Poland was not developed because of fear of WWIII or just German take over.
Visit this summer again, I bet it is much better now.

Looking at the crime rates between here and my time in the UK, the babooshkas do a better job. They will actually call the police or a neighbour if they see something bad happening, rather than watch a crime occur and take so long to identify someone from grainy CCTV footage that the window for charging them has already passed. A video of a crime happening is no substitute for someone intervening.

It always amazes me how similar our words are. But yeah, I have a similar example of how they can save lives, literally. One has a house near the main road leading out of town and while she was outside watering her flowers, she saw a motorcyclist overtake a car but misjudged the distance between the upcoming car and he veered off the road before he could hit it. Now the old lady saw everything and immediately went to call the ambulance, and after they came one of the doctors thanked her for calling them so soon as the next call notifying them of the accident came after 5 minutes of her call. Bear in mind, no one saw her call since she was in her house.
I kinda like them. If you open up to them, you can also hear some interesting things every now and then.

When I first moved into this building I was pretty annoyed by the old lady upstairs always leaning out of the window and telling me to lock the gate etc. Then after someone tried to rob the place I understand why she does it. She's actually descended from the Romanovs and has a lot of interesting stories.
Quite often we have drunks being annoying and the only people I see standing up to them are these little grandmothers.
