I'm going to leave this here for people to think about. Women are discouraged from being the dominant partner in the relationship by society. Not the big, societal trends that we're seeing pop up. I'll give you my own story because I'm incredibly conceited. Backstory: Born and raised in Catholic Whitetown, Texas. The only colors aside from white that you see in this town are working Mexicans and people passing through. Most of the younger crowd is open-minded, but not Cali-tier scum. Not even close.

Moving on. I'm the dominant in my relationship without question. My boyfriend is incredibly shy, submissive, but the most prominent issue we face is that he's disabled. When we live under the same house I will be the main financial provider and he will work however he can. However, we are both planning for him to pretty much be a stay at home husband. He will do the house chores, and after I can actually teach him how to cook healthfully (he comes from a background of junk food) he will take care of the meals or we will cook together. We're both okay with this. I prefer to be the main provider/caretaker/dominant in the relationship. This is who I am, I like it, my boyfriend loves me, and we're happy.

The problems start when I try to explain this mindset to my friends and family. None of the friends my age (early 20s) understand this. They just can't wrap their minds around a boyfriend not taking care of the girlfriend or them at least being equals. I've got one friend who is sympathetic towards it, but she's kind of libtrash. Got knocked up at 19 by a pothead shitskin. She's as sweet as she is dumb, and holy shit she's fucking stupid. Hard worker, cute as shit. Too bad it got wasted on trash.

My mother is the absolute worst in this respect. She got the butt end of a divorce about 10 years ago. They side with the men in this state and county, the judges here have the 'good ol boy' mentality.) My mother worked 60-80 hours a week at a waitress job to save for and support herself and me. I admire her for this. She stepped up. My father, on the other hand, blew through $1,200,000 in two years, tormented me and my mother for years, and is now a real estate agent. Bitched for years over how no one would hire him.

This is the mentality that a lot of mothers have with their daughters, and it is a problem that a lot of dominant women face. Women who have the assertive position in the relationship, who actively seek love, who actively participate in things other than cooking and cleaning, are considered desperate because they give love and affection, and don't just expect it to fall into their laps. Women like this are looked down upon.

Fortunately, most of the women who are like this are confident and comfortable enough with their own mentalities don't need reaffirmation from people outside the relationship. This is the case for me. But it got me seriously thinking about this problem.

In small, close families, women are exalted for looking pretty enough/having qualities that make them 'deserve' love without having to put in any extra effort. Men are exalted for being able to support their families through financial means. It is rarely the other way around. We can throw out all the societal advancements we want, but the facts remain that the most influential voices are the ones who are closest to us.

Not that there's anything wrong with traditional relationships. These roles are completely valid. But a woman should never be bastardized for wanting to take the assertive role, and neither should a man for wanting to take the passive role.

Bottom line: When a woman takes the role of a "traditional man", she is often looked down upon. Women are encouraged by close family and friends to only receive love and not give it. These are the voices that matter most, and they are wrong.

There's no harm to outsiders in those relationship types, and it's entirely beneficial for a couple working together.
But some people indeed get negative about it.

I've known my husband for a decade over long-distance before we met. i saw how he had a hard time due to his circumstances and some bad relationships. When we finally got together it only made sense that i afforded him the time, encouragement and space he lacked.

He'd done the same for me.

But even then, I too have to hear negativity from my mother, and she should know better as she married for money and had a divorce.
