I don't know much about latin america, but I wonder if acceleration of territory growth had anything to do with it.

In the US we didn't sprawl out through the west of the country for near a century. The northeast served as a standard hub that grew to modern times or even surpassed technology in europe.

it was only then that we expanded into the west through manifest destiny for the most part.

I imagine, and I don't know how latin america was colonized, but the speed at which they tried to conquer the land might have spread our their great society too much.

Argentina is a special case. It seemingly had everything to succeed: good weather, resources, white people, yeomen farmers. I don't know what went so wrong.

Maybe the distance to markets? Even Australia has China and SE Asia. Argentina is just far from every important market.

On the subject of culture, this answer is a lot more difficult to answer than economics.

One thing that I have heard is that Protestant Christians look to the future, but Catholic Christians fixate on the past.

batista fled the country. that's how they got into power. actually, castro was a prisoner of batista's at one point. all batista had to do was keep him in prison or kill him.

now that being said, the poor were stepped on, and i don't doubt that a lot of cubans felt that they had to get on batista's good side to really flourish..but there was a large chunk of the middle class. it wasn't miserable

You are right. There is no point in "crying over the spilled milk" now, as we say. But it is undeniable that poverty in Colombia is heavily correlated along racial lines. Of course, much of this may be for historical and cultural reasons, but what if there is a more to that. What if there is some inherent reason that hinders their/our development? It's worth considering the "what-if" scenarios. If nothing else for scholarly discussion.


But Colombia's demographic problems are more than that. Don't quote me on this, but I remember reading that Colombia was very hostile to immigration from European countries. Particularly from the late XIX and early XX centuries when the big waves came. Colombia not only didn't encourage immigration (like Argentina) but actually discourage it with a myriad of restrictions. From what I understand they were particularly hostile towards Jews.

And truthfully, Colombia wasn't a very hot destination to begin with. The weather and the mountains didn't help. But how different would be this country if we had received more European immigrants? Many that came with industry and knowledge. Maybe we will never know.
