Actual safe genetic engineering is way off. At this stage we still really don't know how human genetics actually works in development. All we've done is identified some genes and know what a few of them do.

At this stage the best analogy of genetic engineering I can think of is like a little kid taking some complex computer software, randomly adding or remove some lines of code and seeing what happens.

Genetically engineered humans would solve the race problem entirely.

You probably could not archieve such an improvement by any realistic increase of weatlh or living conditions.

That's more the case for traits that don't exist in nature.

Any phenotype you want an organism to have can be determined by looking at existing genes and how they manifest themselves in a developed organism.

A peak male, in every sense, would be the result of plugging in all the necessary genes. If you want an adult male to be able to benchpress 800lbs at a bodyweight of 175, that's another story altogether.

Of course, many traits are the result of more than 1 gene. But that still doesn't mean the combination will be impossible to figure out. It will just take longer. And if certain configurations combine to produce deleterious effects it will take even longer.

But it's far from impossible and I seriously doubt it's hundreds of years away. Especially as our ability to model these things inside computers improves.
