I'm pretty much convinced major political parties like the Democrats and Republicans can't collapse. There's too much at stake in politics in this age. At the end of the day, a party will rally, voters and money, around a candidate or platform, even an imperfect, compromised one, because they're more fearful of the other party having power than any kind of positive feelings towards their own side.
Fear is the most powerful motivating factor, and it influences voters on ever end of politics. If the Democratic party collapsed from infighting, they would be ceding every election to the Republicans for the next generation or two. Most of the Democrats realize this, even some of the densest one, the only people who want the Democrats collapsed either aren't Democrats themselves, or fringe radicals within the party that can't think more than five minutes in the future.
