Taxes are only justifiable if the entity you are paying them to is providing you proper services in exchange. One of the fundamental rules of successful taxation is that it has to be worth it to those paying the taxes. Once it is no longer worth it those being forced to pay inevitably rise up in protest. This scenario has happened time and time again throughout history.
If California threatened to stop paying taxes and Trump threatened something drastic that would result in the death of American citizens, Trump would not be in the right. Trump is supposed to be a president for all Americans. That means serving the people, not shoving your ideals down their throats. If California finds his order to be so morally reprehensible that they cannot comply then Trump needs to come to the table willing to compromise.
But threatening to redirect the river? That's holocaust-tier. Memes aside, it's holocaust-teir. California would have every right to engage in full blown rebellion at that point, and the entire country would suffer tragically because of one stupid man's incompetence.
