That the Muslim Brotherhood and the clerics hated Assad and rallied for Jihad against him, and that people resented the fact that the government was led by Alawites, are also facts, but you can't discount this either.

Jihadists=/=al-qaeda You, and oh boy are there a lot of others, who didn't read media (al-Jazira for example) crying about political prisoners obviously don't get it and think it was Assad "trying to poison the Revolution". But it was the media AND the protestors who wanted Assad to release Zahran and others, and that's exactly what he did. It's way too late to cry about it or make up some retarded conspiracy theories when there are not a single non-salafist or non-ikhwanist left on the battlefield.
And it wasn't a secret who Assad kept locked up just fyi... When protestors scream salafi and anti-alawi&anti-christian stuff while demanding their sheiks to be released it's not a secret either who those people were.
