Actually that is just the root of original nationalism. Nationalism as an ideology was pushed by the Catholic Church as a means of connecting European people to their soil by intertwining it with divine mandate. Essentially, 'God gave you this clay, so you protect it even if your ruler dies.'
The original purpose of this breed of nationalism was to make communities more stable in the wake of shifts of power, or in case the Church needed to depose a ruler for their own interests.

the first issue and perhaps the biggest is governance. how would country A know a joint leadership would be fair on both? no matter if there was a singe figure of power, or a council- there would be constant vying on the side of A and B nationalism guarantees both states would be governed in their own best interest,otherwise there is a very real risk some regions would be treated as second class,or run as banana republics we see this in spain, and in china
the second issue is culture people choose to live in different ways, and have different values perhaps country A keeps dogs as pets, while country B eats dogs (and had laws accordingly) these countries would probably prefer separation just for cultural reasons because joining together would mean a great deal of conflict this issue is fundamental, and only solvable if in a "culture war" one nation gives up their beliefs out of tolerance or wishing to avoid conflict in the new merged society the fact different peoples have radically different worldviews is too often glossed over
the third issue is economic interest nation states are known for preying on each other, but what is the other option "radical redistribution of world resources" Is probably the communist answer some kind of global investment policy combined with asset seizure, and trade protections sounds nice, but efficiency is achieved by pooling resources, not by splitting them and there are some places (eg. middle of desserts) that would always be a resource drain
