Are you actually sentient or just a colony of bacteria, viruses and dna.
If every cell in your body is meant to be replicated as off-spring, then it would indeed mean that our only purpose is to keep replicating as some sort of bacteria. We just so happen to be fortunate enough to be able to contemplate our existence.
Is life existence? Or is it merely just matter and cells replicating itself.
How can you even prove to me you are alive, other than that you can process data and wave your hands around on a keyboard. Is cognition and movement life, when does life stop?
If I cut off your leg and keep it alive in fish aquarium, technically you are still alive, even if the rest of you dies. So this implies that life is not existence, therefore, you are already dead or somewhere inbetween. You don't have a soul, because that would imply shit like trees and crystals have souls.
You are just walking, talking multi-cellular organisms which constantly mutate very slowly in order to make more, and that's it.
Cameron Cooper
I'm just a simulation of a life once lived. As are you. Welcome to immortality
Sebastian Howard
fuck off this is off topic
Bentley Sanders
Biologist here: This is such a retarded, ignorant existential crisis typical of a teenager that just learned basic biology.
Get the fuck out of here.
Your blood is not your 'self'. It's a component of your self. Your cells live and die on your command, and to take them out of the greater container with your perceptual frame of reference is to render them not yourself.
Similarly, a clone with all your memories and experiences that suddenly pops up out of nowhere is not you: You can't see through it, and it could live an entirely different life from you from that point from where it pops up.
Ayden Stewart
Hold your hand in fire and ask again.
Noah Rodriguez
>a clone with all your memories and experiences that suddenly pops up out of nowhere is not you
Technically it is you because it shares the same physical and mental experiences for any given environment. Just because you change the environment doesn't necessarily mean you're changing the person. Only if you subject one of them to a different environment which results in different physical brain structure then you could say they are different.
>it could live an entirely different life from you from that point from where it pops up.
If you put both clones under identical environments I see no reason to think they wouldn't make the same choices given their brains are identical and the brain is where decisions are made.
Adam Cox
Existence is having your hand in a fire?
John Smith
>you are just >that's it These attempts at nihilism. You fuckheads do realize it was the failure of optimism that brought nihilism, right? Not angsty pessimism. If I am "just bacteria" then I am the most divine bacteria to have ever lived.
Zachary Mitchell
l can't hold my hand in fire and honestly believe I'm not feeling pain. The qualitative experience of the pain is too intense to deny.
Henry Torres
Dank mother-fucking memes and handfuls of ketamine
fight me
Gavin Parker
So that is all existence is to you, pain avoidance?
Tyler Wood
I'm just saying it proves your own existence to yourself. If I put my hand on the stove the qualia is so intense that I can't deny there's a "me" inside who is getting hurt.
Leo Lopez
>proves Nobody asked to prove it, you were asked to define your experience and all you can come up with is life is pain.
Elijah Edwards
>Are you actually sentient >How can you even prove to me you are alive >Is life existence? Or is it merely just matter and cells replicating itself. >You don't have a soul
Samuel Reed
>>Are you actually sentient Bacteria and Viruses respond to stimuli too, that doesn't prove sentience, do you really understand what it means or are you just responding to the environment in your example?
>How can you even prove to me you are alive So if I make a machine that doesn't like to be burned, its alive?
>Is life existence? Or is it merely just matter and cells replicating itself. Burning your hand gets in the way of the replication of many of the cells that manufacture your perception of a mood.
>You don't have a soul Nothing to do with a soul, the folklore of Martyrs and Saints with the apparent best quality souls had uncanny abilities to defy pain and damage.
Wyatt Green
Everything you said is true. But it's also true that I can't put my hand in fire and convince myself I don't exist and that the pain isn't happening. I don't know why this is the case. I see no reason why cells would have qualitative experiences. But still, I don't seem to be able to deny my own senses. I guess we're "hard wired" that way.
Zachary Lewis
>But it's also true that I can't put my hand in fire and convince myself I don't exist Have you ever actually tried? Maybe not with fire since that has long lasting consequences, you could try putting cigarettes out on yourself, they only take a week or two to heal, but there are tutorials to train to put nails through your body other feats of pain endurance that don't cause much physical damage and people can even control their bloodflow sometimes and if you want to feel want its like to not experience existence just enter the K-Hole.
Henry Edwards
Well you're made of leafs so this is that
James Cooper
you're like 98% bacterial dna and 2% human dna
Ethan Thompson
The type of pain I'm referring to is one which hasn't been desensitised to.
Caleb Butler
No, you said you can't desensitize yourself to pain or experience what it is like to not feel like you exist and I think, you haven't even tried and other people have clearly done what you imply is not possible.
Jeremiah Thompson
Does it matter? You're here aren't you?
The reason were here is because were here. We may as well make something of it.
We sit in a Planck-length sized sliver of 5 dimensional space time with separate timelines constantly branching off at right angles in the 6th dimension. You could have gone your whole life without knowing that but I just told you. Does it make life different? No.
Lucas Torres
Yes, we can desensitise ourselves to pain. But I'm talking about a brain and central nervous system which hasn't yet been desensitised to pain.
Robert Martinez
Existence is cyclical. The universe has bee in a constant cycle of birth and death for eons outside of the boundaries of time. In trillions of years, when the universe enters the last phase of the "big crunch", a new "big bang" will occur and the cycle will begin again. We will be born into this world again. We will live our childhoods again. We will enter adulthood again. And we will die again.
But we will not make different choices than the ones we did. All cycles are identical. This thread was created by you countless times in previous cycles. We have had this conversation countless times in previous cycles. And we will have it again countless times in future cycles.
There is no free will. There is no choice. There is no escape by ascension beyond the cycle. We are in hell.
Evan Walker
>outside of the boundaries of time stopped reading. Existing outside of a measurement of duration is like existing outside of height, width, and depth.
Daniel Jenkins
Oh well, you were suppose to be defining existence, not finding the one form of existence that conforms to your predetermined expectation and projecting your own limited mood onto the whole explanation.
Isaac Robinson
That's all well and good but I assure you I still can't hold my hand in fire and convince myself the pain is not real or that there isn't a me in there getting hurt. I guess I just can't deny my senses (nor would I want to, lest I become a radical sceptic about everything).
Elijah Hall
Have you trained to do it? You probably can't play golf very well either or be convince you can get a tiny ball in a little hole from quarter mile away in less than 4 strokes without practicing.
What is the closest you have been to realizing you are dying?
