His great and true potential was restrained, like so many before and after him, by the political class of his time. He, too entrenched in that very same class, did the best he could do without being too revolutionary so as to destabilize world powers into senseless war.
His policies brought about the end of the cold war, and ushered in a possibility of a united world; not just a united USA - and that's where a lot of things went wrong. He wasn't running his administration as much there in the end as he was deferring to the new regime of Bush's and neocons looking to rabble rouse the then little known conflicts all over the middle east, and Afghanistan.
Not without his its scandals, his administration was the right place for the right time; just not raw enough for real resolution to some of the more complicated issues in US politics at the time. His focus was on world peace more so, as the threat of nuclear war was imminent.
His era brought us the 80s, a blissful existence for many that lived during a time of prosperity, or at least enough help from the gov't to not worry about basic necessities.
The whining crying millennials of today wouldn't be able to bear it, though, as face-to-face human interaction was the norm then. People knew their place, but also knew they could grow to become something greater than they were born in to. We're on the verge of doing it again, but this time, more raw and unfiltered.
