I don't think any of you realize the seriousness of a military intervention in a country. In the best case scenario, we do a quick decapitation, install a new head and hopefully the Mexican population will lie down and accept it, disregarding the domestic politics that brought forth the previous people in power. In the worst case scenario, it turns into a situation exactly like Iraq, but now on our borders. Destroying critical infrastructure will worsen Mexico problems, firstly the economic problems that have led to the current illegal immigration problem, but even more so possibly to a humanitarian crisis. The problem is even worse now that they have no strong central government and now their problems are our problems for the reasons stated above. Let's not forget the other foreign powers who now have a launching pad to interfere with American matters on this side of the hemisphere.

I've literally been saying we should send our military to clean up Mexico since around 2002. If we can't rule our own continent we have no business anywhere else. Once Paco and Leaf-kun are in line, then we can go lay waste to the rest of the world, not before.
It seems absurd and disproportionate that we would need to resort to decisively defeating Mexico in a war. Military conquest of Mexico is not the objective foreign policy right now, it is securing our borders, preferably with Mexico paying for a border wall. If America is serious about having Mexico make concessions to us (the border wall), Mexico will probably pay us before tensions escalate into a full blown war. That still does not solve the structural problems behind illegal immigration. Mexico's economy is not as strong as ours, and so are the other countries south of Mexico that contribute to the illegal immigration problem. If Trump takes out the opportunity for Mexico to economically develop to dis-incentivize illegal immigration, then our options are to increase border and immigration enforcement with decreasing support from a weakening a Mexican authority, or become more involved in Mexican domestic affairs. The scope of the problem has now increased.
