Their economy is doing better than most western economies actually. There's really only a few western countries that are doing well. They have very few people on welfare compared to countries like the United States even. Many American cartoons from the 80's were animated by Japanese, and many original Japanese cartoons from the same time period only gained traction in the west thanks to heavy editing. Come the 90's and on, they started getting more freedoms and without americans telling them what to do, you get a peek at what they consider "original" content which runs the gambit between heavily-inspired knockoffs to shit so goddamn fucking unique and different it's almost too bizarre to even comprehend.
They're too proud of their own country and race, which wouldn't be a problem if their islands weren't so small and overpopulated. It takes western influence and leadership to guide them even still - and they're basically the controlled variable in an experiment of nurture vs nature, with african americans on the other end of that spectrum.

Many people snap out of it when they realize it isn't what they thought it was and the people are not who they think they are.
