They are transhumanists, and believe their "ascension" into higher realms of intelligence, and near immortality is a holy cause that has been spoken in prophecy. That does not mean all will perish, because as "gods" they will see themselves superior to all work, as they already have established, though they still do some work, but not much. They will hand out what are essentially bread crumbs of what they have to the masses and will be praised as heros of mankind, and though many diseases and ailments will be cured, the ulterior motive is sinister. Slowly the population will lower their guard to the idea of mind/computer integration, and the deed will be done. Once an overwhelming majority are apart of the network, control will be implemented and free will as we now know it will disappear overnight.
The ones being controlled will never know this, because once you have let them in, they will alter your thoughts, your memories and motives. Some will find success beyond their wildest dreams while others will crash under the weight of the technology. This will be on purpose. To put those who are harmless in power while those who might challenge the status quo will never have the ability to do so.
