Because it generally operates in opposition to British unionism which rightly or wrongly was considered very right wing. Plus the original British allies of Irish nationalism were the whigs and liberals.
It's worth noting that the Irish War of Independence was considered "the most conservative revolution of the 20th century" and that the pro-treaty side especially were very socially conservative.
