Back when only men had voting rights the vast majority of them were also married, so while there were individual men who voted in their self-interest, they were a minority. It's easier to see it as one vote per family as opposed to one vote per man - married men will vote in the interest of their family, and since family men were the largest demographic it was realistically the only demographic you could pander to as a politician. Therefore they were incentivized to dictate laws and policies based around empowering the family, and if you subscribe to the conservative viewpoint then you also acknowledge that the nuclear family is the cornerstone of society, if not the foundation for civilization itself. When families are given the opportunity to thrive, then so will society.
