Yep, it probably wasn't completely a uniquely Jewish thing at first. Judges were essentially proto-Israelite warlords, and since they didn't claim kingship (as to not anger Egypt or Powerful Near Eastern kingdoms) using the modern scholastic look at the editing history of the bible, we might be able to summize that David himself probably held the rank of judge, the first king of Israel, Saul, seemed to lack control over David (perhaps because his own kingship was hollow and he had used David to subdue other judges and local tribal warlords, as the bible tells us.) We know that Saul is deposed by David (and most likely actually murdered by him) and then David, the first and really only competent king of Israel adopts the symbol of the star as his kingdom's crest and builds his temple that was marked by it. Then he appoints at least some scholars to heavily edit the existing Torahic holy literature of the time.
The "Star of David" has been a symbol of Juden and law enforcement ever since.
