People used to distribute porn on the Usenet. You had to split the files and uuencode them and stuff and send them as multiple articles. Same could be done (and probably was done) via email and mailing lists.

The problem with banning porn is enforcement. Even in places like China, it's easy as shit to bypass their "great firewall" via a VPN service. This is not to say that we shouldn't do it, only the autistic NEETs like us would have the know-how to go with a VPN.

Yeah I would prefer a more libertarian approach to it and try to avoid the government from regulating it as "art/speech" but at the same time it can cause damage to society. It's a difficult situation. Right now we already kind of have that lax approach and we see what happens.
