Germany has very little petroleum, and all of their avenues to get it at the time went through enemy territory. They produced a lot through coal synthesis but it wasted a lot of effort. Even what oil they still had access to at the end required extra supply lines outside of the core territory, which used up more resources.
Wartime logistics has very little to do with economic systems, the USA effectively nationalized large sectors of industry during the war as well. So did Britain. Everything is pseudo-socialist during total war.
