My family didn't go on trips to theme parks - we went to museums and historical sites. My sisters got new toys for Christmas and Birthdays and if we wanted something else our dad made us put it on layaway at the toy store and do chores to earn it. My dad didn't drive a brand new sports car to work, he drove a 1986 Ford Tempo that we spent countless weekends working on together and which survived long enough for me to graduate college. I didn't have a cell phone until I was 17.
And you know what? I was fine. It gave me an appreciation for things. It gave me a sense of respect for saving, for earning, for living within my means instead of going into crippling debt to buy a new car or a new phone or a new TV every couple of years.
