Graphicdesignerfag here who makes ads for a living.
Ads are not put out to increase sales for certain products where there previously was no buyer's interest (that would be too risky to predict for the salesman), the purpose of ads is to take product groups that seem to have steady buyership, and to accelerate this even further.
Also, who the fuck advertises cigarettes alone? You normally advertise a shop or a retail where you buy a cigarette, not the brand. It's not 50's anymore that there are Marlboro ads all over.
