You are conflating fascism with totalitarianism or tyranny. Fascism and Communism in application ended up looking for similar in practice but the ideologies' sources were very opposed which is why the supporters were in conflict.

American conservatism is very much focused around the free market so fascism is very alien to it but this isn't true of Europe. The moral foundations that draw people to the left or right are more useful for making distinctions between different cultures.
Don't misuse fascist as "tyrannical or authoritarian politics I dislike" use it when referring to the actual fascist movement.
