Because a majority of these people are the average working person who got injured, then put on highly addictive and poisonous substances, without any hopes of being "weaned" of. American doctors will prescribe this like OxyContin to your dad for chronic back pain after a bad fall, then just cut him off once he's healed. Then their only option is to go through serious opiod withdrawal, or acquire a painkiller/sedative through dubious means, then they overdose.

To put this into perspective, if you plan on going the withdrawals alone, expect to not work or have the ability to care for yourself for weeks. Most people just don't have that luxury.

So the opiod overdoses have become the number one injury related cause for death in the United States because our doctors are not trained to handle these substances, and the companies which produce them are in cahoots with pretty much every level of our healthcare system.

Truth is we need weedLMAO, so that a significantly less addictive and less dangerous substance can replace our Neanderthal medical practices. Also it will cripple the cartels. In places like Colorado where a respectable history has been established with legalization, teen and adult marijuana usage has decrease, DUI accidents have decreased, etc.

First you have to do something about the doctors who are pushing opiates on patients. Most people aren't just going out and shooting up heroin because they're bored on a Friday night. Usually somebody has surgery or chronic pain and then gets hooked on the pills given to them by their doctor. The problem is that the prescription runs out, so they look for alternative medicine.

The next step is to get alternatives to people who are taking opiates. That probably is going to mean putting people on other drugs that are considered, in the grand scheme, less bad. Kava and marijuana are options for treating chronic pain that seem to be less destructive. More methadone clinics would also help.

For people who are hooked on heroin, one of the best options is to set up doping centers for people to use their drugs. Yes, it's degenerate, but Vancouver's InSite facility has done lots of good. Clean needles and a supervised environment are good for preventing other public health problems (like AIDS and overdoses) and can be used to push treatment on the users.

Finally, build the wall and gtfo Afghanistan. The heroin is coming from Afghanistan and through Mexico. The Taliban or something similar will probably take over Afghanistan again, but at least they stopped poppy production. Cut off the supplier and the logistics network.

Why should he solve it? Let the druggies and the potential ones kill themselves. Thin the herd of the weak ones.

1. Stop pharma from giving it out.
2. Open harm-reduction/treatment-for-addiction/therapy sites for the currently addicted.
3. Temporarily squeeze the illegal trafficking of opiates.
4. Legalize weed.
5. Make sure people know that opiates are addictive and life destroying.

1 will prevent many new addictions. We could also make these companies pay more to give it out, while stopping them from passing the cost onto the patients who do need it.

2 will control current addictions, diminish their effects, and allow people to get back to work, which should offset the cost of running such centers.

3 is simply to shepherd people to the harm reduction sites. Steps 1, 2, and 4 will do the real work against drug dealers. They'll never go away, but the size of their industry will be shrunk to stable, manageable levels.

4 gives people a safe alternative drug and would also promote trust in government (on drug matters) so that people will believe it when they hear step 5.

5 is because people will listen. There are at least 100x less heroin users than weed users, because people know heroin is dangerous. We should make sure they keep knowing.
