The myth of the "Islamic Golden Age" is simply that... a MYTH.
There is a grain of truth to it but it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Islam being responsible for the knowledge that was generated in that region at that time.
The Persians, while adopting Islam managed to maintain many of their older traditions of the Zoroastrian Magi. They still had all the old translations off Greece, Alexandria and Egypt with regards to Alchemy, Astrology, Maths/Geometry and they believed that the Quran said Knowledge should be pursued to discover the glory of Allah (Not a far jump for them because they were doing the same thing before, since Zoroastrianism was monotheistic...they just changed God's name to Allah and dropped certain traditions)

The dominant philosophy in their society shifted. There was always a conflict between the more fundamentalist "whats not in the Quaran is not worth knowing" crowd and the "let us study the glory of Allah's creation", but round about 1150 history biggest cockend Al-Ghazali won the argument for the derka derka crowd.
Non-religious study was deemed pointless from then on and Islamic civilisation died. Averoes fought a valiant rear guard trying to refute his arguments a bit later, but he failed.
