Consonant mutation is simply a way of making the words flow better in a sentence. It prevents a repetitive staccato to the words and a break in the sentence.

It's easier, in Welsh, to flow from an 'f' which sounds like a 'v' in english to an 'm' than a 'b'.

So 'Fy mag' flows faster and smoother than 'fy bag' which breaks up the sentence.

It can also be used to denote gender, such as in 'Ei chadair' and 'Ei gadair' the former being feminine and the latter being masculine (i.e. the owners)
