The solution to the student debt problem is ending federal student aid and federal university funding. The vast majority of the population couldn't afford college as it is now without government assistance, so in this instance colleges would have to hugely downsize, become more efficient, and drop tuition prices by several orders of magnitude in order to profit.
Everyone still can't afford college afterwards, but that's okay, not everyone should be able to afford college because not everyone should have to go to college to be successful. You sure as hell shouldn't need a diploma to walk into a Mcjob.
You are right that Bernie would have gone into a hostile climate, but (as he's stated) his campaign, like Trumps, was seen to be somewhat symbolic, a campaign to raise higher awareness of democratic socialism and not to be taken seriously. Then he started winning like crazy and probably would've won the whole thing if the DNC hadn't screwed him over. You could say he sold out after the nomination, but considering the opponent was Trump he'd be hard pressed not to take what he saw as the lesser of two evils.
