To me it seems like EU is rather protectionist against foreign influence, for example, look at the high tarrifs on Chinese steel. In general, it is very hard for other countries to get trade agreements with the EU

By the way, the EU Commission leader is chosen on the basis of who wins the EU election, which means the EU Commission is directly affected by the election as well. So you keep hammering on about how the "EU parliament doesn't have much power" - firstly it does, and secondly the Commission, which has lots of power, is also affected by the election.

I know exactly what power the Parliament has because I've read into it - they vote on legislation that has been put forward by the Commission (the President of which, as I say, is chosen on the basis of which party wins the EU election).

But let's say it was true that the Parliament had little power (it is certainly true that they don't have the power to initiate legislation). Then surely that would just show how undemocratic the EU is? That the only thing that we directly elect has little power?
