What happens was The Free City of Danzig, which was a free and independent city state, had voted to join Germany. Poland had nothing to do with it because they had no authority over Danzig.
What Hitler wanted was The Polish Corridor to connect his newly acquired eastern territories with Germany. Poland refused this because Hitler was known for being an asshole who would go back on his word the moment it became convenient for him, notably the whole Munich Agreement thing among his fucking over of Lithuania. In fact, their official justification for the invasion of Poland was a series of attacks on German radio towers they blamed on Poland.
