Back in 2003 I watched this movie in a World Religions class. I liked it then. I like it now. It's the only truly good movie Ryan Gosling has ever starred in. The issues in this movie are still relevant today. I think this movie informs the challenges facing modern fascism.

Also with Gosling being some kind of La La Land darling it's pretty great that his career was launched by this. And these images are forever.

The movie can't reach an audience if it doesn't condemn killing jews. You can say "gas the kikes, race war now" until you're blue in the face but you don't engage ideas that way. This movie isn't to preach, it's to provoke.
And the comparison to American History X is superficial. Sure both feature skinhead Nazi main character but that's about it.

Is only the sad truth. In all these films, Fascism is regarded as a bad thing. Despite all the good sentences and statements in the film.
This stuff always keeps us small and stupid or mentally disturbed in the end. That is why they make films like this. Real Fascist films were only available in WW2 or in the Franco period in Spain.
