I am in management, and holy fuck I am a talent-less, skill-less hack. I have a degree that is 15 years old, and really am not sure where I would fall if I had to find a new job.
I am thinking of starting my own company or business, but I would need $400k at least. Which is the fucking cycle, in order to start a business you need money, in order to get money you need to work, but you never are able to work enough to save up to start a business, until you no longer need to work (retirement).

It's the generic terminology used in any standard headhunting/recruitment. Anything below that (1-2y's) you're under qualified, anything over that (6-9y's) you're over qualified. You generally won't see job listings with "10+ years" because those positions are filled in house through internal transfer or in-hiring

I got my current job my researching my specific site and getting to know what they needed/wanted, so when I went in I told them what they wanted to hear and landed the job. If you really want the job you would have gotten it.

After you find the 10k+ open IT jobs in your area start comparing their responsibilities.
Google and read about the technology listed in the responsibilities and be a freaking google tech. (Work at a help desk and google any issue that comes through the phone) Do this while making a small but decent wage, get better with time and advance yourself.

Mechanical Engineer here and I can sympathize with you. I went to GATech, top grades, and 5 years later and over 1000 resumes I'm working for a small mom and pop making near min wage doing CAD/CAM and hydraulic fixture design. I can't even get an interview and I only got this job through dumb luck.
