Geert's self-sabotage and lack of campaigning. FvD has better candidates, better arguments, an actual campaign and has not worked itself into a corner where nobody will work together with them regardless of the result. Geert's plan was to shift the overton window to make nationalism and criticism of islam more mainstream, he has done so by now.
Many of us only reluctantly supported Greet to begin with because of the abscence of a better alternative, we got one now.

In all fairness he's an uncharismatic mumbler and he's interviews is a torture. Marin Le Pen is a robot girl no less. Where's good ol' Mussolini when you need him.

I think I understand Geerts behavior better now.

Geerts plan no longer is to gain power through regular channels. Instead, I think Geert may be undergoing a very conscious effort to shift the Overton window with respect to Islam and immigration, and has been doing so for a very long time. Like any skilled politician, he knows this can't be done by propagating ideas in the 'unthinkable' category. It can only be done with ideas that fall on the edge of 'acceptable' and 'radical'. Of course in time, when he succeeds in shifting the window a bit, new ideas appear within reach to shift it even further, and so on. Consider the following video from 2001:

Geert clearly differentiates between (regular) Islam and (extreme) Islamism. Emphasizes how the vast majority of Muslims are good citizens, is very careful to only criticize in terms of indisputable facts. This progresses.

2005: speech ban for foreign imams, temporary immigration stop (nothing on refugees)
2010: no more than 1000 refugees a year, no new mosques, outlaw of the so-called 'general pardon'
2012: virtually identical to 2010
2017: zero refugees, close all mosques, preventive detention of radical Muslims. This is also the year the PVV dropped all pretense of having a serious program.

Notice there is no progression in his stances between 2010 and 2012. This is the period when the PVV was (sort of) in the cabinet Rutte I. I think this was the time Geert realized that governing wasn't the best way to achieve his goals. The best way to shift the window is being in opposition and shouting as loud as you can. The reason we get the vibe that Geert seems to 'fuck up' is because he truly doesn't want to be in power. The reason he doesn't have any detailed plans is because he doesn't need them.

Why does he do this? He knows that getting rid of Islam is going to take time and no party can rule for decades straight. By doing this he blazed the trail for parties like FvD and VNL (who would have been considered dangerously extreme in Fortuyns days) and THOSE are the guys who will have to transform his plans into executive power. Furthermore, he even forced mainstream parties to take on mild anti-immigration stances (e.g. CDA). It is no longer fringe to criticize Islam, it is acceptable, if not popular. He is forcing his ideas not by executing anything himself, but by shifting the window so that others are forced to do it for him.

If true, this is the greatest political play I've ever seen and a genius move on Geerts part. His work is far from over, but the fruits of his labor are starting to appear. FvD is only the beginning.
