Listen up, there's no such thing as "gay". This whole thing where you "identify" as a certain "sexuality" is entirely modern and has not existed for more than a hundred years or so. Traditionally, way back in time, in the medieval age and the antique age, people did not discern between "straight" and "gay" or "bi" or "trans" people, rather they would see a distinction between normal sex, and sodomy or perversion.
In this traditional view, normal sex is between a man and a woman, usually married, for the purpose of having children. Sodomy or perversion, on the other hand, is sex merely for the purpose of pleasure. So a married man with children might still go and fuck a boy in the ass for pleasure, he wouldn't be "gay" because he would not associate his fucking of boypussy with some character trait, he just did it for pleasure (sodomy) instead of for child-rearing (normal sex).
From this point of view, the whole talk about whether homosexuals are "born with it" or not, is entirely pointless, and redundant. Men are born with a desire for sexual pleasure, bred into them through the generations. There's two (general) ways of achieving pleasure: Penetrating a woman's womb, or penetrating something else. A person who is willing to do the latter, would be considered "gay" today.

There isn't really any single "X gene", apart for specific proteins obviously, genes work in conjunction with each other and even something as simple as eye color can be governed by many genes acting in unison. Something as behaviorally complex as sexuality would by necessity involve many genes, and maybe even the epigenetic expression of them throughout a lifetime.

My understanding is that childhood abuse does increase the likelihood that someone will turn out gay, however only a small percentage of the gay population traces it to something like that.
So trauma may well contribute, but it definitely isn't the overall cause.
