It's a major problem and it's by design. I remember talking to my grandparents about it - they could name every monarch in order and tell you a bit about what they had done. They were in the first A-level cohort in 1951.
British film from the golden age (1940s - 1960s) assumes a much greater familiarity with our history than anyone has now. Same with fiction. I took the missus to Oliver Cromwell's house in Ely and she didn't know who he was.
