Ethiopia had a number of factors that were unique in relation to the rest of Africa. Above all others, one of these factors was trade. Axum, now Eritrea and Ethiopia, historically was along one of the major alternatives to the "Silk road" trade network that dominated history up until modern times. Trade is very important because it means resources, riches, and other items can flow in from the rest of the world and into a nation that otherwise would not have them. I'm not talking rice or fruits or silk pillows, I mean things like books and skilled individuals. We're seeing this same thing happen now in East Africa where Chinese investment is shaping these countries, and historically across all of Africa where whites colonized their lands. Paying attention to trends, you'll notice a lot of shit in Ethiopia started to fall off after Muslim conquests in the north and the growing influence of Arabia had both cut off the Ethiopian trade route and made it irrelevant at the same time.
Ethiopia's highlands are also an excellent defensive terrain where they could resist any attack or incursion by barbarians/savages/niggers, and they were good enough to the point where even organized militaries like later Turkish incursions and even fucking Italy failed to completely subjugate the country. Without the risk of having their country routinely destroyed, Axum could soar above their peers who were constantly raging generations-long racial wars that led to nowhere.
At the same time, those well defended and well networked highlands were surrounded by another resource: Niggers. Random (Bantu?) tribes with no coherent civilization were repeatedly "farmed" from surrounding countryside and exported to foreign nations, most notably Arabia, which gave them good leverage in the trade that made them so prosperous.

"On-Par" is simply a poor choice of wording. They certainly weren't on par with the other great powers, but they were still above many other civilizations which were not very advanced or powerful.
For example, take the USA, China, and Russia. By some metrics you can say that they are all great powers, but they are not on par with eachother. The USA is above the others and Russia is below (and still falling behind) the others. They're not on par, but they are all 'great powers'.
Generally when people think of Africans they think sub-Saharan. Not the Ethiopians, nor North Africans.

That "Colonial administration" was based off of African territories which Italy already possessed, namely Somalia and Eritrea.
The lasting effected involved Italy stealing whatever relics they could find (Which weren't returned until the mid 00's), local attrocities, and forced movement of populations (Such as the splitting of Amhara populations between modern Ethiopia and Eritrea) which would lay the groundwork for future conflict.

Because Aksum is (relatively) unknown. People hear of ancient Egypt in movies, books, video games and high school.
