Well yeah if college were free all jobs would have to determine a new benchmark for qualified workers which would be a degree plus a bunch of on field experience to ween out the others which actually is what companies are doing already.

You've probably seen the meme " oh you gotta degree but need shit loads of experience for the entry level job" well that's because nowadays more and more and going to college which is saturating the value of the degree.

I literally said what Molymeme said in the first 30 seconds to my class about half a year ago when a prof made an argument that we should make university more available to everyone and lower standards to do it. Everyone stared at me but couldn't say anything because there was literally nothing that could have countered what I said and by arguing back, they'd just be acknowledging the worthlessness of their own degree (and by extension time and efforts).

It felt good but also kind of bad to redpill them so hard. They're nice folks, my colleagues.

That's called progress. There used to be a time when high school along made you stand out. We're not complaining now that too many people are going. In fact we want less people to drop out. Call me crazy, but I want the 'normal' for how educated people are to increase.

Every textbook you need is available free online. It may not be the best for marketing yourself, but from the standpoint of actual learning, absolutely.
To go further, there's no reason any self-respecting person doesn't bother to get the equiv of math and comp sci majors, and undergrad understanding of physics and philosophy of sci. You need these to think well and to understand the reality you reside in.

I suggest going but don't go if you aren't in STEM. I went to college for non-STEM and it was fun you can meet hot girls and get laid and learn a few neat things but it's an absolute joke in terms of career decision. Nobody in my class got a job in the field we studied except like two people and they are making about as much as a toll booth worker. You can use the same amount of money for youtube equipment, camera, mic, lighting and a subscription to adobe CC and a $5 a month WordPress blog and make as much money as someone in college sitting around at home picking your butt like Styx. You would also get a name for yourself which most people don't get. If you team up with a few other smart ppl you can start something like red ice, freedomain radio or the alex jones show and make even more money...all just sitting on your ass reading the news and commenting about it like 50% of the ppl here do anyway. It would be hard but it's probably not as hard as spending 8 to 10 hours per day for 4 to 6 years doing pointless classwork and sinking into tens of thousands into debt.

Going to a trade school is better than going to a university. You actually learn something useful and generally don't have problems finding employment.
