I remember reading in The golden Bough about an Egyptian religion, Mithraism iirc, whose chief deity was born on December 25. The book also traces religion's roots through the ages back to animism and tree worship. Rain ceremonies, solstice ceremonies, etc. It would have been in the shamans interest to study the elements and the cycle of nature, so they could perform what were perceived as miracles.
