1. Our justice system is far from perfect. Not everyone in prison or on death row is guilty. I would rather have the guilty walk free than the innocent executed.
2. Monetary cost of an execution is actually higher than life in prison: mostly due to the drawn out appeals process. Yet we can't get rid of this process due to the risk of killing innocent people.

If they're too dangerous to keep in prison they don't have enough self-preservation to be deterred by the death penalty. The only reason for the death penalty in that case would be to save costs, which it doesn't do now. The death penalty for relatively minor acts would be a strong deterrent to normal people.

I think the death penalty should be carried out by the victims family member or friend. That way we can still kill people for wrongdoing, but avoid it being carried out by the state.

Rulings and shit should still be in the states hands obviously.

As of today there are acts which are crimes by law, where harm is not committed. Giving the government the right to levy such a stiff punishment for minor acts lets citizens be executed for essentially arbitrary reasons.
