Yes, we know Lovecraft was ridiculously racist and xenophobic for much of his life. He also recanted and became a staunch liberal later in his life. He was a very strange and flawed man who wrote a bunch of strange stories, but he was not a bad person.
Both of his parents were committed to a mental institution at different times.
