The duel between Gandalf and the Balrog is one of the best uses of special effects ever IMO.

I don't remember him saying Middle Earth was based in the real world. I know in the prologue to LOTR he wrote that he hated allegory though and that "I much prefer history to allegory". He may have been inspired by real world people i.e. Anglo Saxons are similar to Rohirrim, but to equate them entirely is false and not what he was aiming for.

For example, Gandalf is obviously not Christ, but at the same time, there are some obvious similarities between them.

For this reason, it's very easy to invent a "non-canon" reverse-allegory
