It's one of the current problems with AI. Choosing good data sets - and good here implies some inherent bias everyone has - and the fact that they don't know how the AI arrived at that conclusion after all the maths/computation applied to that data set.
But not all techniques are like what you friend described, there various types of machine learning fields. What your friend described is called "supervised learning." "Unsupervised learning" is basically throwing data at a AI and have it figure out all the patterns by itself which is the current holy grail of a true AI, btw.

If they could track an increase in temp, or an increase in movement of the toy, it would likely coincide with an impending climax.
By combining their wealth of demographic data with this new toy data they could model the average sexual interests of a certain segment of the population in greater resolution. This information can be used to create new and more appealing content, it can be used by marketers to better deliver ads, it could even be used in medial studies on human sexuality. That data is extremely valuable, so obviously its a ripe vein to tap.
