CATHOLIC GENERAL >DEDICATED CATHOLIC GENERALS EVERY SUNDAY, RANDOM GENERALS THROUGHOUT THE WEEK
Everyone is welcome. Discuss news, ask questions, give answers, be kind to one another, and above all assist one another in living the virtuous life. If you feel something is missing, please ask for it to be included while providing a link. As usual, we will be assisting with answering questions.
We are currently in our period called Lent. Lent is a period of fasting, prayer, and refinement that lasts the forty days before Easter. To understand the rules of Lent, here is a link for you: catholicnewsagency.com/column/rules-for-lent-1114/
Pray that Francis changes his ways. Pray for Cardinal Burke and the few brave cardinals remaining.

I fucking wish. Not happening at least until 2050 or so, though. Europe is turning right politically, we are turning left. One political party wanted to ban the public TV from broadcasting the Mass, it's awful.
I don't lurk around Sup Forums that much lately, is this thread a common thing?
Brody Gonzalez
Didn't do much because of my 12 hour shift starting today. Went to bed at 8. Worked on personal projects and played a few games in the meantime. Very underwhelming St. Patrick's Day. How about you, man? How were you?
Combat cynicism with sincerity, user. How exactly is it anti-church?
Hunter Jackson
Why do you follow the pope? He's a modernist scumbag
Ryan Garcia
Are the Spanish youth as cucked as they are everywhere else? What's the general opinion of Franco in Spain?
The thread's up every Sunday, and occasionally throughout the week. It's truly a blessing.
Landon Williams
Damn. 12 hour shifts are insane. Mine was pretty much ideal. I'm on break from school, so I was able to go to Mass and then spent about a half hour in the adoration chapel.
Met up with family, had a great dinner. 10/10.
Xavier Walker
They used to be a very common thing. Almost daily for 1-2 years until /his/ was created. And /his/ had a lot of people complaining about too many Catholic/Christian threads, even.
These threads post-election are rarer but we have posters making them on Sundays and I make them throughout the week.
We used to have common Christian threads but they devolved into sectarian fighting and Catholic Generals rose out of that because Protestants kept being complete shitposters in sectarian fights.
The people on this board tend to only follow the church. His politics is something most of us reject.
Robert Bennett
That sounds like a top day, user. 10/10.
Ryan Diaz
See the example I posted here Also, there have been graffitis on churches saying "the only church that enlightens is the one that burns", and those things aren't seen as outrageous, sometimes they are even defended
It depends, the majority are the typical edgy commie kids from college who don't know crap about politics. They are not as cucked as most of the West though, we are somewhat stable
>Franco He is called "Spanish Hitler", so... Most people despise him. Interestingly enough, only old people who lived when he was the ruler of Spain like him
>Protestants Oh wow, a schism. Speaking about that, what's the general opinion on Orthodox Christians? I sorta think they are pretty close to Catholics
Samuel Morgan
>"the only church that enlightens is the one that burns" That made me cringe so hard. I can imagine some emo leftist thinking they were being a badass by writing that.
Ryan Rivera
>Also, there have been graffitis on churches saying "the only church that enlightens is the one that burns", and those things aren't seen as outrageous, sometimes they are even defended
Absolutely childish. You're right to call it edgy. That sounds like it came straight out of r/atheism. I suppose it is better than some places though:
>Oh wow, a schism. Speaking about that, what's the general opinion on Orthodox Christians? I sorta think they are pretty close to Catholics
Haha, well the Protestants tried doing their own threads and they fell apart and pretty much do no threads now and just shitpost on Catholic Generals exclusively. Not much of a schism. Sup Forums and 16/2chan's Christian population are heavily Catholic traditionalists with interspersed Orthodox posters. They disagree with each other at times but largely support one another as brothers. Pretty much all the churches with claim of apostolic authority are treated respectfully by the Christians here, despite disagreements.

Oh, I've seen that, it's absolutely disgusting. It reminds me of when a drag queen competition winner appeared dressed as the Virgin Mary. Blasphemy is seen as a normal thing apparently
No disrespect to Protestants, but... they sorta had it coming if they only shitposted
Sorry, I take too long to write, I've been up for way too long. I wanted to mention a Facebook page I know called "The Patriarchy". I mean, it's nice

I visited a Catholic bookstore yesterday. I bought this. At the age of 24 I feel like I might be turning a leaf on my degenerate adolescent ways and growing up. I'm trying to live more in the present and not with the regrets I have for being a NEET for the past few years. I need to seek out a good spiritual director.
Chase Gonzalez
What Bible would you recommend?
Blake Morris
That's great to hear, user. Sounds like the Holy Spirit is making Himself felt in your life. Cast away that regret and guilt, and be joyful that you're feeling something from God. Prayer works wonders for the negativity that has a habit of working its way into our hearts. Getting to know Christ is like finding a refreshing oasis in a desert of negativity, guilt, and isolation.
Check out some Bishop Barron videos on YouTube. I've always found them to be calming and intellectually stimulating. Archbishop Fulton Sheen's old TV show is on YT as well, and those videos have really helped me. God bless you!

I've heard nothing but great things about the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible.
It's horrendous, honestly. Apparently Catholic Traditionalism is on the rise in Europe though. We need to protect and foster that moreso. And you're all good, man.
Well I'm happy for you, user. We have a recommended reading list, youtubers, and other resources in the OP. Please do check that out! And us at these threads can always help you as well.
Personally the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible. However the recommended versions are in the OP recommended book list. At the very top.

Ex-agnostic here. I've been in the process of trying to convert for about two years on and off. Went to a Novus Ordo church not knowing about or understanding Vatican II for about a quarter of that time, became disillusioned and stopped going after feeling empty for awhile, one sunday the gospel reading got replaced with some reading from a Sufi Muslim scripture and I just up and walked out.
I still studied up on Church history, saint lore, the Bible, and literally everything else I could find in my spare time. I prayed the rosary daily, now multiple times daily. I didn't find a traditional parish until about 4 months ago, but it's honestly, definitively what I've been looking for my entire life. I want more than anything to be baptized, but I'm not sure if there's anything more I should know at this point. I'm in the middle of reading the Catechism of the Council of Trent at the moment, I've already read the Baltimore Catechism and the 1989 edition of the CCC but so far this one seems the most thorough. I've been fasting and attending Mass during the week as much as often as I can, and I'm not having doubts per se, but I can't help but think if I'm hesitant then there's some critical element I'm missing. What am I lacking? It's not faith and it's probably not knowledge, so what is it?
Nicholas Martin
>from the pastebin Tales of Love and Virtue
This is an ever-growing list of videos and stories that touching, sweet, and relevant to Catholic Generals as they are all triumphs of love and/or the human experience. While many would refer to some of these videos as "sad", we cannot forget that these tales are all about love in the face of struggle and the victory despite of it. Feel free to recommend additions to the list on Catholic or Christian Generals.
The church carries with it the greatest of human stories in its 2000-year-old history: The story of the saints, the champions and role models of the Christian faith. This first section will be on them and the second will be other links.

>Apparently Catholic Traditionalism is on the rise in Europe though. We need to protect and foster that moreso. Yes, it's on the rise, but it is in a very delicate state, more people are open to it, but they are afraid to admit it. People seem afraid of being traditionalist. Difficult times we're living in

Parishes around the world have what is called "RCIA Classes" (Rite of Catholic Initiation for Adults). Basically it's weekly classes that run through each part of Catholicism and let you ask as much as you want. Over time you get to know the whole parish community generally and it ends in your baptism and confirmation.
And of course we can always assist you as well.
I'd recommend going to a catechism first before the Bible to grasp the essence of the faith. The Bible need be read with some understanding of the text. For generally understanding the religion, the catechism serves novices much better.
Jayden Baker
I must go to bed now, but I'll make sure to visit the thread if I see it again See you guys, God bless you all
>Is Florida leftist? The majority of the state is conservative but that's because of the heavy white american presence above the two most southern counties which basically functions like a mini california.
I'm living in miami-dade which is one of those counties, you find only extremes here. Lots of conservatives but still eclipsed by absolute degenerates.
I mentioned there are a lot of leftist spaniards here, most of them are well off and/or highly educated but on thinking about it a lot have seem rather redpilled as to what spain has become since it's usually lack of skilled jobs over there which brought them here.
Robert Hughes
Goodnight and thank you user. May God bless you as well.

That is an interesting dilemma. You strike me as being very intellectual, so perhaps at some subconscious level you feel hesitant to jump in because, in your mind, there is something missing from your own research, some crucial step in formation that you did not come across on your own.
Perhaps the sheer vastness of information about the Church has made it so you feel that you cannot, out of respect and love for the faith, seek to become baptized without finding and understanding this elusive phantom concept.
In my opinion, you are not missing anything so vital that you cannot be baptized. From your post alone, it is evident that you are more literate in Catholicism than many Catholics I know. I would suggest discussing this with a priest. Relay your experience and your path to the Church, and tell him about this indescribable feeling.
Does it help if throughout my youth i received a protestant education and hopped from various denominations? I know there's stark differences but I assume some cross-over would serve me.
Maybe a complete fresh start would serve me well I suppose. Dicked around in nihilistic atheism for near 7 years and only started to seek out god in some form in any serious manner last year. Either way, taking some notes here on that and bookmarking a ton of stuff from the sticky.
Nolan Reyes
I've been sitting on this post for a little while now and I can't help but feel I have too little information to be able to assist you effectively. But I do notice one thing: You know much, you are very observant, but you do not mention how God's love has effected how you act in your life beyond it. Perhaps this is a calling, maybe to even the heroism of the saints.

Does it bother you guys that academic views on Christianity are so at odds with the traditional views?
For example, the Jesus Seminar, a group of 150 scholars set out to reconstruct the historical Jesus came to the following the conclusions
>Jesus of Nazareth was born during the reign of Herod the Great. >His mother's name was Mary, and he had a human father whose name may not have been Joseph. >Jesus was born in Nazareth, not in Bethlehem. >Jesus was an itinerant sage who shared meals with social outcasts. >Jesus practiced faith healing without the use of ancient medicine or magic, relieving afflictions we now consider psychosomatic. >He did not walk on water, feed the multitude with loaves and fishes, change water into wine or raise Lazarus from the dead. >Jesus was arrested in Jerusalem and crucified by the Romans. >He was executed as a public nuisance, not for claiming to be the Son of God. >The empty tomb is a fiction – Jesus was not raised bodily from the dead. >Belief in the resurrection is based on the visionary experiences of Paul, Peter and Mary Magdalene.
Or Bart Ehrman who is largely considered an authority on the historical Jesus believes he was an apocalypticist who never claimed to be God and that the end would happen in the lifetime of his disciples?
Gavin Ross
>Does it help if throughout my youth i received a protestant education and hopped from various denominations?
Yes and no. You get some basics down but also may be quick to view Catholic ideas in Protestant ways. It is important to come with an open mind and ask questions and provide criticism so you can come into better learning. A fresh start, as you put it. And for the basics of the intellectual end of the church I can recommend some reading too if you have certain interests.
Dylan Hernandez
Kill yourself, namefag. We don't want your paedophile religion here.
Chase Cox
You must be new. Welcome to Sup Forums!
>Does it bother you guys that academic views on Christianity are so at odds with the traditional views?
Well mainly, yes, but it gives me a great opportunity to separate the mainstream faith (Evangelicalism, protestants, modernists generally) from traditionalism and allow them room to grow.
To my knowledge most mainstream academics speak of Christianity in Protestant terms. Even in response to non-Protestant Christianity they only speak in Protestant memes. This is why Catholicism is hated so much and Orthodoxy is just vaguely touched on. This gives us a good position to dismiss them wholesale and begin with far less baggage than, say, some silly Pentecostal.
Zachary Green
We ded again.

>And for the basics of the intellectual end of the church I can recommend some reading too if you have certain interests. This does sound interesting to me, but I fear I'd have to leave such inquiries on the backlog for a while because of where I'm coming from. Layers of protestant theology and fedora atheism to peel away.
You were right though, thinking back through most of my childhood they tried to equate the catholic church to satan himself damn near constantly. Muh salvation by faith alone
The Ignatius study bible would still be good purchase for someone like me?
Catholicism has a strong presence down here, so I hope finding a good parish won't be too difficult but as I mentioned before it's very liberal and I doubt they were unaffected.

>This does sound interesting to me, but I fear I'd have to leave such inquiries on the backlog for a while because of where I'm coming from. Layers of protestant theology and fedora atheism to peel away.
Well if you'd like something for the very basics to introduce yourself I'd recommend three books:
>Introduction to Christianity by Joseph Ratzinger This is the pope before Francis and he's an excellent theologian. This is a general introduction and made for newcomers.
>The Last Superstition by Edward Feser Feser is a philosophy professor and not at all a theologian and philosopher in his own right. He is, however, an excellent teacher and commentator. This book is a polemic against "New Atheism" ala Dawkins, Dennett, and the like. Think of it as an anti-atheist The God Delusion with far less of a stick up his ass and far more teaching.
>Scholastic Metaphysics: A Contemporary Introduction by Edward Feser If you want writing that isn't polemic in nature then this is a good book for you. It's an introduction to classical theistic thought that responds to modern criticisms and is very thorough while still being legible to novices.
>The Ignatius study bible would still be good purchase for someone like me?
Most definitely, but I'd recommend a Catechism first if you're just getting into basics. A catechism is basically the Catholic doctrine explained in plain text, and there are commentaries to that as well. As you're new, the version of the commentary does not matter.
When the fuck is this shit pope going to call for a crusade? I just want to be needed and useful for one time in my life, boys.
Samuel Bennett
At least you bump the thread!
Faith in God presupposes belief in God, user. It is a faith in God that is praised in the parishes, not faith of God. The latter is a prereq.
You can be needed and useful in your life without it being about causing suffering. Not only that, you were made for such a thing. Sainthood is the vocation of all people.
Connor Wilson
I appreciate this very much! Thank you. >I just want to be needed and useful for one time in my life, boys.
For the time being, why don't you try to be worthy of a crusader's armor by self improving? Do you SYO?
Brandon Gutierrez
It is, it's basically an opportunity to travel. It's such a big part of Catholic tradition here in Flipland, to the point that devotees do it in different and sometimes interesting ways, up to and including the following:
>travelling barefoot >entire congregations doing the whole trip on bicycles >self-flagellation processions >going to as much as fourteen churches on Maundy Thursday (we have a shitton of churches here in the capital)
Bentley Gonzalez

At mass.
You could go and watch a mass anytime, just don't receive until you know Who you are receiving

Julian Anderson
They speak of doctrines and only in Protestant terms. When its atonement they go to penal substitution and not satisfaction. When its the nature of God they go to theistic personalism and not classical theism. This sort of stuff. It litters mainstream western thought up and down, leaving classical views and views of apostolic religions basically unknown. When they do speak of apostolic religions it is staunchly Catholicism and refer only of "organized religion", dark ages, Galileo, and the like. Protestant memes. Thankfully there is much talk outside of this and many serious scholars don't listen to the stuff I mention or the Jesus Seminar you mention but it isn't mainstream Christian thought at all.
Hell, New Atheism's anti-theism is pretty much exclusively targeting evangelical protestantism.
RCIA but no baptism at the end.
Jace Butler
thanks guys. final question, what's involved in the confirmation process?
Ryan Cox
>but it isn't mainstream Christian thought at all.
Rather it isn't mainstream ACADEMIC thought at all.
